How Do Hormones Physically Affect Us?
Our physical appearance, including body composition, hair growth, and skin condition, is greatly influenced by our hormones. When hormone levels are imbalanced, the body undergoes changes that can influence overall health, including both physical and mental changes. Here are some ways in which hormones affect physical appearance:
Body Composition
Fat Distribution
Hormones influence the distribution of body fat. Imbalanced hormones can contribute to weight gain and other physical changes. Women tend to store fat in areas such as the hips and thighs, which is influenced by the hormone estrogen. Men, under the influence of testosterone, typically store fat in the abdominal region. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells and is involved in the regulation of appetite and energy balance. When the brain does not respond effectively to the signals of this hormone, fat accumulation can occur.
Bone Structure
Estrogen and testosterone also influence bone density and shape. Estrogen helps maintain bone density, and a decline in estrogen during menopause can contribute to bone loss in women. Testosterone contributes to bone density and muscle mass in men and women. Excessive levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, can lead to decreased bone formation, contribute to bone loss, and can increase the risk of fractures.
Hair Growth
Androgens (including testosterone) are responsible for the growth of body and facial hair in both males and females. Changes in androgen levels can affect the pattern and thickness of hair growth, and may contribute to hair loss.
Skin Health
Hormones play a significant role in skin health, influencing various aspects such as oil production, hydration, and the development of certain skin conditions. Similarly to their role in hair growth, androgens also influence skin. They can lead to excessive production of sebum (a naturally occurring oily substance that keeps the skin moisturized), which causes acne. High cortisol levels have been associated with skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
